Sports building

Specialty Involved:

Planning, building, structure, M&E, budget estimate, landscape, interior and sports technology
The main buildings of the project include one stadium, one gymnasium, one natatorium and one tennis center. As for overall layout, the west zone is laid out with the stadium and a training field, and the east zone is built around the circular gymnasium in the center, which is embraced by the natatorium and the tennis center in symmetric form, thus to create a biaxial symmetry in both space and massing with the stadium in the west zone. Meanwhile, the stadium in the west zone, the three buildings in the east zone and the Long’ao Building on the west side of the site jointly form a steady layout of “tripartite confrontation”. The central zone, the sports square for the National Games, has become a landmark square of the city.

Planning and design

Planning and design:
• Layout of “tripartite confrontation”: formation of a steady layout of “tripartite confrontation” by the stadium in the west zone, the three buildings in the east zone and the Long’ao Building on the west side of the site
•Biaxial symmetry: primary north-south axial symmetry and secondary east-west axial symmetry on site
•3D traffic: setting of a central platform based on site layout to create a complete and rational 3D traffic organization system

Operational planning:

Operational planning: :
• Reservation of a large commercial operation area at the beginning of design to provide conditions for post-event operations
• Maximal consideration of the conversion of event space into post-event functions

Architectural design

Architectural design:
• Full embodiment of the regional and cultural characteristics of Ji’nan through the architectural vocabulary of “lotus in the east and willow in the west”
•Grouped sequential layout of “willow leaf”-themed structural units for the stadium in the west zone, containing rich changes in the rhythm
•“Lotus”-themed gymnasium in the east zone, adopting a bottom-up structure to form petal-shaped cascaded texture

Structural design

Structural design:
•Adoption of general assembly analysis in innovation, analyzing the upper large-span spatial steel structure and the lower concrete structure as a whole
•Adoption of folded plate-type cantilever space truss structure system, realizing safe, economical and rational structural design
•Super-long seamless structural design and construction, supported by whole-process temperature analysis

Green building

Green building:
• Full utilization of available green space around the stadium, and adoption of the ground source heat pump (GSHP) as a supplement to the centralized air conditioning heating and cooling system
•Equipment of solar water heating system for the tennis hall and natatorium, and utilization of renewable energies to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide

BIM

BIM:
The main stadium of Jinan Olympic Sports Center has a complex architectural style and thus involves frequent crossing of various specialties; the scattering of equipment rooms, bathrooms and other rooms as well as their functional and technical demands give rise to a complex descending floor design. The cooperation between CCDI and NBBJ in the scheme design stage starts with the BIM platform, and, from the lotus petal pattern through the complex stand structure inside the stadium to M&E pipeline, BIM is everywhere employed as assistance in the design process. Through conducting a comprehensive pipeline check based on BIM models of various specialties, the collaboration and perfection of construction drawing design have been completed efficiently. In the architectural field, the up-and-down design of the stand and the curved surface pattern of the glass curtain wall constitute the largest difficulty of design, and this is where BIM plays its role and perfectly displays the up-and-down stand structure. The glass curtain wall with curved surface is widely applied on the planes at all levels and in different patterns; parametric design and BIM model are combined to precisely divide the curtain wall with curved surface.
