Haikou East Railway Station of Hainan New Circle Line

Since the completion of its Eastern-line Circle HSR in 2010, Hainan has seen its transportation industry entering a new development stage. Haikou East Railway Station, as the largest railway station on this line, has since then undertaken the departures and arrivals of some inter-city trains and the operations of some cross-sea and circle trains.

After landing in Hainan Island, tourists can start with Haikou Railway Station, and arrive at any town of this beautiful island within 80min by the newly-built HSR; the beautiful landscape along the route can add a lot of experience to their travels.
Looking ahead into the front white buildings from Yingbin Avenue, the fluctuating roofs, extended massing and crossing construction make the buildings feel like the shadows of trees, and provide a precious cool place. Indeed, on this hot island, the best architecture is the architecture that can provide a clean and comfortable space for passengers, and the best decoration is the nature-derived familiar expressions, which explains why we have introduced the concept of “coconut forest on an island” in the design of this project. Architectures inject coconut forest and sea landscape into both the city and the urban life, and they become landscapes themselves.
The station building modelling of Haikou East Railway Station adopts “sea waves” as its motif and uses “coconut leaf”-shaped spindle-like stretched beam structure as its matrix; supported by the lighting and sun shading system, it aims to create a real/virtual-alternated waiting room, themed by coconut forest and sea landscape. On the square, the ordinary waiting room and the three levels on the roof are connected with urban and railway areas, just like fluctuating waves, and they integrate the station with the city, implying a tolerant, ambitious and promising blueprint.
The fully-opened corridor on the first floor not only adapts to local climatic characteristics, but also completely realizes the design requirement of a permeable and convenient entrance hall and provides a comfortable buffer zone for entrance/exit. The spindle-like skylights and the arc-shaped sections on both sides can guide air flow, and strengthen natural ventilation. The waiting space adopts a semi-open design, and can optionally use mechanical ventilation according to the seasons and climates.
As a transportation building, efficient flow lines constitute the fundamental starting point of design. Haikou East Railway Station provides extremely convenient entrance/exit conditions for passengers; by means of driving or walking, passengers can enter the open entrance hall from the east or west side of the station building, then take the escalator on either side of the public hall onto the second-floor waiting room, and finally reach the high platform via the vestibule and board a train; passengers getting off a train can enter the exit vestibule via the vertical transportation system; passengers wanting to transfer can directly enter the south open vestibule, and go into the waiting hall for transferring to another train; passengers wanting to exit can reach the ground exit hall via vertical transportation, and then leave after having their tickets checked.
