Specialty Involved:

Building, general drawing, structure and M&E
As a complex consisting of office buildings, commerce and theater, it is located in the north zone of the newly-developed Xiamen International Convention and Exhibition Center. Borrowing the image of sparkling ripples at the intersection of the land and the sea, the design transforms the rational and structured building massing into a building complex that contains sunshine and sea waves. We have defined her as a music box filled with sea breeze and sunshine; the champagne metal exterior wall and the varying hollow-out treatment not only provide a shading function but also project mottled shadows. The harp-like glass curtain wall of the theater ingeniously integrates supporting structures and curtain wall framework. The performance hall wrapped by white sprays and the vortex-like seats in orchestra and balcony surround the stage inside tier upon tier. The commercial plaza and the palace of art are close to each other, integrating virtuality and reality as well as softness and toughness. The continuous aerial layer, connecting the theater and commerce, provides a shelter for people engaged in activities on the plaza.

Planning and design

Planning and design:
• The rational building massing retains the traces of water ripples, and is transformed into a building complex that contains sunshine and sea breeze.
•The towers are laid out on the west side of the site, adjacent to the urban green space, thus to improve the quality of the office building.
•On the east side there is a plaza open to the public, and the theater on the south end of the plaza has become the visual focus of the plaza.
•The plaza is built with a sinking-style small square to connect the underground commercial streets in the east and west plots, fully explore the plot values, activate surrounding resources and create a sharing model.

Design concept

Design concept:
• Theater: a music box filled with sea breeze and sunshine
• Office towers: presenting an imposing manner when seeing from afar and embodying fine details when taking a closer look, accompanied by diversified light refractions and dramatically capturing the brightness of the sky and the shadows of clouds with the change of light and the shift of observing angle.
•Commercial flow lines with diversified scenarios.
•Close layout of the commercial plaza and the palace of art, integrating virtuality and reality as well as softness and toughness

Architectural design

Architectural design:
• Square and pragmatic plane layout, using 2D “flat outer contour” and flat wall body” to maximally ensure the integrity and efficiency of interior functional space and to embody the double-tower image of symmetry, dignity, elegance and rhythm.
• Theater hall in three-story full height, enclosed by towering folding-surface glass curtain wall in the pattern of harp strings, presenting an elegant and upright appearance and seeming to be able to create beautiful music with the strings.
• Design of the auditorium of the performance hall in the pattern of vortexes created by sea waves, and adoption of seats in orchestra and balcony to surround the picture-frame stage inside tier upon tier.

Structural design

Structural design:
• Design of seamless structure to realize the smooth functional layout of the building with a super-large massing.
• Analysis of the seismic linkage mechanism of a complex super high-rise multi-tower structure.
• Fine design to solve the problem of the shrinkage crack of super-long structural concrete.
• Adoption of a comprehensive wind-resistant structural design in a complex wind environment

Curtain wall design

Curtain wall design:
• Adoption of fish scale-like 3D curtain wall on the outside of square towers, combination of modern elements (belt-like shading pieces and LED light belts) and traditional vocabulary (tower, lantern and fan), and vertical alternative layout of curtain wall units from two angles to achieve a steadily-elevated gradual change effect.
• Harp-like glass curtain wall of the theater, ingeniously integrating supporting structures and curtain wall framework.
• Champagne metal exterior wall and the varying hollow-out treatment, not only providing a shading function but also projecting mottled shadows.
