Dongguan Citizen Center is located at the end of the urban cultural landscape axis, adjoins Riverside Sports Park in the north, and faces residential land in the other three sides; it also enjoys convenient access to roads in all directions, and is surrounded by beautiful landscape. In this project, it’s the intention of the architect to renew the profound affections of citizens for places and make art centre and cultural palace truly become an essential part of urban life & leisure, as citizen arts are rooted in these places.
Based on the characteristics of the project, the building is divided into three relatively independent blocks, i.e., Civic Art Centre, Workers’ Cultural Palace and Integrated Theatre, thus enriching and opening up the interaction interfaces between citizens and the building. Meanwhile, in the north and south of the site, the two ends near the urban cultural & landscape axis are suitable for building a public square, which will provide a place for citizens to stop by and engage in all kinds of activities and will also serve as a buffer zone between the building and the city. There is also an identifiable and efficient public passage among the three blocks of the building.
The north and south squares can both provide a sufficient visual range for citizens to stop by and view the building cluster, and they undertake different functions. To be specific, the north square, contained and elegant in overall design, is used to serve Workers’ Cultural Palace, and is linked up with the north sports park to play a transitional and buffering role; the south square, spacious and smooth in overall design, is used to serve Civic Art Centre, and provides a place for mass gatherings. Both of them provide second-floor and third-floor outdoor activity platforms, where citizens can look down at the city from different heights and strengthen their visual interactions with surrounding plots.
The building surface adopts GRC outer wall surface to effectively block direct sunlight from east and west sides. The facade is designed with a windowing mode of three modules to create a rich facade texture; some indoor spaces are also provided with direct lighting windows. On the whole, the building is white, simple but elegant, and its integral form presents a sense of sculpture; combined with the site enclosed by the peripheral tall arbors and the lawn greening of the squares, there is a poetic beauty, like white snow in an early spring. When darkness falls, the three display panels facing urban arterial roads on the building, supported by high-tech sound-light designs, will project dynamic images onto the building, and provide a dynamic experience of the sound-light effects. Relative to the contained and elegant temperament in the daytime, the colorful and dynamic artistic style during the night will be even more fascinating.
